How to Dress Your Kid for Your Next Winter Adventure

If you're planning on taking your kids skiing or snowboarding this winter, you're probably wondering what kind of gear they'll need. While it's important to keep them warm, you also don't want to break the bank buying gear that they may quickly outgrow. We have you covered -- here are our top tips and products for many happy family days on the slopes.

  1. Dress them in layers. Layering is key to staying warm in cold weather and you want to make sure you're choosing materials to keep your kids warm without being too bulky. Start with a base layer of thermal underwear followed by a mid-layer of fleece or wool. We recommend the fun and colorful Burton Kids' Fleece Base Layer Set made with comfortable DRYRIDE Ultra wick fleece. Avoid cotton, as it will absorb moisture and leave your child feeling cold and clammy. Top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer, like our Burton and Boys' Exhile Cargo Pant.
  2. Protect their extremities. Kids lose a lot of heat through their head, hands, and feet, so it's important to make sure those areas are well-insulated. Look for a hat or helmet that covers their ears, neck gaiters, and gloves or mittens that fit snugly over their hands. The Kids' Vent Gloves are a great youth option to keep their hands dry and warm.
  3. Find them the right ski or snowboard boots. For their feet, choose socks made from Merino wool or synthetic materials, like Smartwool’s Wintersport Full Cushion Yeti Pattern OTC Socks and make sure they have boots that fit properly. If you’re looking for the right ski or snowboard boot, look to our expert staff to provide personalized recommendations for the best fit. And with our large assortment, you are sure to find what they need!
  4. Ensure they have comfortably fitted gear, year after year! With our Junior Trade Program, save big on kids gear as they grow bigger. Buy new or used gear and trade it in and receive 50% of the original purchase price toward bigger sizes for the following year. Each package includes skis or a snowboard, boots, bindings, and in-season size exchanges. From ski to snowboard packages, trade in at any time and save big!

Outfitting your child for a day on the slopes doesn't have to be difficult or expensive. By following our simple tips, you can keep them warm and comfortable all day long while continuing to save year after year. So, what are you waiting for?
